Learning Goals are curriculum expectations stated in language that students can understand.
Every day, we list our goals for each subject area on the board shown below. The appropriate mini-posters are inserted into sheet protectors on the board. Students help to highlight key words using dry erase markers, or they reword the goals in order to make them simpler and more easily understood. (NOTE: The Learning Goal mini-posters we are using on our board were created by another Grade 5/6 teacher in Ontario, named Jennifer Runde: http://www.rundesroom.com )
Success Criteria define what students need to do in order to demonstrate that they have met particular Learning Goals.
Success criteria:
- are co-authored by teachers and their students
- ensure that students have input into their learning process
- ensure that students understand exactly what they need to do to be successful
- encourage students to move toward becoming independent, self-monitoring learners

We are using Learning Goals and Success Criteria across all subject areas. Students seem to appreciate the way they take the guesswork out of learning!

Great blog! I'm wondering if I could borrow your images for learning goals and success criteria? I'm with the Ottawa Catholic School Board and would like to use these images in the SMART notebook lessons I'm creating for the Board for their grade 9 Religion course.

Do you change your bulletin board every day as the title of it suggests?
When you prepped to keep this bulletin board active, did you use pre-existing templates that already articulated your learning goals / learning expectations, or did you use the Ontario curriculum documents to guide what you typed in advance?
Wow! What an effort!
Would love to hear more about how you facilitate the integration of this bulletin board into your daily practise.

We have been using Learning Goals posters for the Ontario Curriculum that are available via Teachers Pay Teachers. We update the board regularly, and move pertinent goals from the Learning Goals board to the blackboard, at the beginning of lessons, so we can review particular goals and co-create success criteria to go with them. When we gather goals on the blackboard, they come from different curriculum areas if our lesson is cross-curricular. Cheers! m.
